Our Programs
Community Education
From field trips and culture camps to community meetings, the Water & Buffalo Alliance works to empower and inform the people of the Wind River Reservation. Book a school visit today, or learn more on our stories page.
River Restoration
Water is life, and healthy waters support, connect, and sustain us. The Wind River Water & Buffalo Alliance is restoring riparian corridors and bringing the river back to the people and animals who depend on it.
We are currently engaged in two climate resiliency projects on Crow Creek and at Crowheart Warm Spring on the Big Wind River to support natural water storage and improve habitat for beaver and trumpeter swans.
Tribal Treaty Rights
We are stronger together. By pooling the collective power and knowledge of the Tribes, non-profits, and community members, we are amplifying our voices and speaking up for what’s important and what’s right.
We have partnered with the Eastern Shoshone Business Council, Northern Arapaho Business Council, and Wind River Water Resources Control Board to seek land repatriation of over 100,000 acres of Muddy Ridge and push the Bureau of Reclamation to address the ecological and cultural impacts of Diversion Dam.
Learn More About The Work
Buffalo Restoration
Buffalo strengthen the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho spiritually, culturally, and our overall wellbeing. By restoring the buffalo herd to the Wind River Indian Reservation, we’re restoring our way of life.
Our current projects include building fences for buffalo on a newly acquired range unit, fee land acquisition for future buffalo habitat, and working with Tribal permittees who are interested in land use change for the benefit of buffalo habitat through fair market compensation.
Food Sovereignty
Food sovereignty is the right and ability of Indigenous peoples to source culturally appropriate and sustainable foods and medicines. When we reconnect to ancestral foods, we can achieve a community centered around cultural connection and health.
